Botanical Inks and Dyes

Cat Lewis £95 Fri 5 June 2020

Botanical Inks and Dyes

full day workshop with Cat Lewis on Friday 5 June 2020

An introduction to natural plant colours. You’ll learn about eco-prints and hammered prints, and how to select and make dyes and inks from plants. Cat will demonstrate making a botanical ink, explaining the processes and materials involved in her work. Then you’ll source and make your own colours from plants, flowers, berries and scrap metals. You'll make beautiful marks and patterns onto cloth and paper, which will go into your own sample booklet. All materials and tools are provided but you may wish to bring your personal art kit, fabrics and papers.

The workshop will run from 10am to 4pm including a two course lunch. Coffee will be available beforehand and tea and cake afterwards, so there will be plenty of time to wander around the Walled Garden and buy plants and herbs, including the top dye herbs recommended by Cat.

Cost £95 per head, maximum 12 participants.

To book please contact alison@walledgardentreberfydd.com 01874 730 169

Catherine Lewis is an artist and botanical colour specialist, making dyes, inks and prints; She was born and grew up in South Wales, she then trained in textiles at Chelsea College of Art and completed a Masters in Fine Art at the University of Wales in Swansea in 2010. She’s been refining and sharing her knowledge of textiles and colour for over twenty years and is now focused on making things less harmful, less wasteful, longer lasting and more local for her Colourfield brand which runs alongside her more personal fine art practice. Catherine creates her one-off textiles by alchemical natural dye and print processes, using ancient shibori techniques and locally gathered materials, transforming each textile into a wondrous physical memory of nature’s bounty. She works with other fashion designers, artists, tv and film producers, to realise their colour and pattern wishes, as well as creating many varied custom pieces for private clients. www.colourfield.wales  www.catlewis.com
